While I agree that the mantels look better "au naturel" there should have been a more co-ordinated effort to tie in the deep colours with draperies, upholstery and the like. The fireplaces do seem to pop out of the porcelain-like walls the way they are.
Aren't those the drapes from 1983? I know they replaced the 1965, which replaced the 1952....so isn't it about time for new ones?
PS, I've stated this before, and I hope Derek doesn't mind me plugging it here...but the "Presidential Libraries" series on C-SPAN is excellent. Last week was Jimmy Carter, this week is Ronald Reagan and will end in two weeks with President Clinton.
Yes, I watched the Reagan Library last night. I also visited the C-Span website and watched some of the old videos. Great!
Hey, what's with the rug in the Dipolomatic Reception room pre-Truman renovation? What is that faded or soiled to show such shadows in photos? I think the DRR was one room that really benefited from the Truman renovation. It looked like someones basement family room with cast off rugs and furniture.
And,one thing that is confusing about some old White House pictures is that book cases have curtains, making one think (at least at first) that FDR is sitting in front of a window when giving his Fireside Chat from the DRR.
Does anyone else agree that the East Room Fireplaces look so much better "au natural"?
ReplyDeleteI really like the East Room the way it is, gold drapes and all.

ReplyDeleteAre the chairs on the platform the chairs from the newly refurbished Green Room?

Arrrrrrrg I wish I got CSPAN.
ReplyDeleteWingnut,
ReplyDeleteNo worries! You can watch the entire program on the CSPAN website immediately after it airs. www.cspan.org/presidentiallibraries
Enjoy!
Have any of you guys called in to the CSPAN Presidential series?
