Miscellany

I added several miscellaneous photos here and there, including a couple in the Blue Room of the Kennedy and Taft eras, a different view of TR's Green Room, the 1922 East Wing exterior, and W in the Press Briefing Room.

A couple of days ago, I added a few others, particularly images of artwork in the State Dining Room and Palm Room.

UPDATE: Dennis commented on the Ike pic, which has always bothered me, so I reprocessed it to fix the fade (and straightened it) and posted the new version (old version here).

  1. I like the photo of the Kennedy's at Christmas in the Blue Room. It helps with the chronology of the Kennedy restoration. Whatever else had happened by Christmas of 1961, the Blue Room had not yet been done. One can see a McKim white and gold chair in the picture. According to an early White House Guide,3rd edtion, 1962, the Blue Room was refurnished with the Bellange chairs and table before the wall covering was changed. In fact, it seems from that guide that all of the state foor restoration was complete, except for the wall coverings in the Blue and Green Rooms, where the new furniture was used with the old wall coverings for some time. J.B. West's account of the restoration implies that each room was done completely, one at a time.

I am also struck by the fact that one cannot really determine the true color of blue from photos because depending on light and postion, the color blue changes. Just compare the Eisenhowers and Kennedy's in the Blue Room.

  2. In the 4th edition, copyright 1963, the Kennedy wall coverings have been installed in both the Blue and Green Rooms.

In the Kennedy Christmas picture, a McKim "chair" is actually a McKim footstool which was part of the three chair arrangements placed around the walls of the Blue Room.

  3. I've been bothered by the BR pic of Ike since I posted it. Now with the Kennedy one to make a before-and-after, it's even more obvious that it's faded. I've now done a fix.
