Christina has passed along a passel of photos from the Getty archive that I neglected in my searches (I was focused on the new Situation Room at the time). It's a dizzying collection of candid moments thruout the Residence mainly from the Johnson and Ford years. I'll be posting them over the weekend.
In the past, I've scraped the brutally ugly watermark off the handful of Getty images I've used, leaving a blurry smudge that isn't necessarily better (the process involves using parts of the tiny thumbnail version). But I'll post most of these as they are, with links to Getty for proper credit. Hopefully, publishers who can actually afford to pay for images for commercial projects will find them here and jump to the Getty site to buy them and thereby make up for my (credited, noncommercial, educational, public service, fair use) appropriation.
UPDATE: Added several photos from Johnson to Bush 1. I'm not 100% confident about the Ford Beauty Salon photo and I'm baffled by one that I initially thought was the Living Room (formerly president's bedroom). It doesn't seem to match the one I already have from that era and the space under the window is missing the characteristic pattered vent.

UPDATE: The votes are in on the Ford sitting room photo; it is surely the Presidential Suite of the Bethesda Naval Hospital after Mrs. Ford's surgery.

Nice to see Lady Bird and her "girls" revisiting their old home with Betty Ford, in the bedroom. Chuck Robb and Susan Ford are there too, don't know who the woman is on the left though, but she looks a bit like Florence Harding to me.
ReplyDeleteThe Beauty Shop picture is correct, but with the reflection, and that it could be reveresed (I can't tell) it is confusing. But there are a couple of elements that make sense. It looks like the "living room" picture was probably taken while she was still in the hospital.

ReplyDeleteWhere I'm confused is the picture of Steve? Ford standing in the hallway to the west wing. What is the room behind the chef? The wall paper could be of the small corner kitchen, but it doesn't fit with the hall and the second floor diagram. If the picture is to make any sense, the patterned wall paper would have to be in the circular stair. Help!

ReplyDeleteIf you look in the mirrored reflection you can see the Simplex clock above the door. The mirrored walls are on the east and south walls.
And, both the Fords are in bathrobes.
My concern about the Beauty Salon was that the wallpaper visible in the 1970 and 1991 pictures doesn't seem to be there in the Ford picture. What I wondered is if this is actually the barber shop seen in the West Wing page.
ReplyDeleteThe dark doors in the background of the Steve Ford picture lead into the West Sitting Hall. The far doorway on the right is the service elevator, the next closest door is the old bathroom, now a pantry. It has the same wallpaper as the kitchen, you can see that paper again in the picture of President Ford making breakfast. The door on the left leads into the President's Dining Room. This photo shows Jackie's re-do of that hallway really well. Also, in the beauty shop picture you can see the double doors into the President's Dining Room, and the arch above the door leading in the the West Bedroom.
ReplyDeleteStephen, how do you know that the bathroom became a pantry? I had come to think the spiral stair had been extended up into that space.
ReplyDeleteI believe Rex Scouten, or Nelson Pierce told me back in 1985, that it had been converted from a bathroom to a pantry to provide storage for the personal food items etc. to be used by and for the First Family. We were in the State Floor pantry or maybe the Mezz. Pantry (and I didn't see the stairs continue up from there). I asked how well stocked the FF Kitchen was kept with personal favorites and was told about the pantry then as I remember. As I think about it, it was probably Mr. Pierce that told me, because he had a lot of great Kennedy era info. and memories.
