UPDATE: Below are the two illustrations I mentioned previously from Singleton's Story.... I haven't added them to the site because they seem too fanciful, with their weird windows and all. They are very similar tho, perhaps so similar that the later one (dated 1800) was based on the earlier one (dated 1799).

ReplyDeleteDerek - Jackie Kennedy - in the introduction to her 1962 White House Tour, uses the bottom picture (I think) of the two you just posted and tells us that it's a view of the house as Hoban originally designed it - with three floors above a basement. I think it's highly conjectural - but still a nice view.

ReplyDeleteAbout the engravings...I've read in A TOUR OF THE WHITE HOUSE WITH JBK on page 14 that these depict Blodgett's Hotel in Washington, with the President's House one of those hazy buildings in the background. The hotel was also designed by Hoban and had some architectural motifs similar to the White House-- thus the confusion.

ReplyDeleteYes, guys Logan is mimlog (the name comes from a combination of my wife's name--Miriam and mine--Logan). And yes that is me in the Dome Room at Monticello. Along with being a White House enthusist, I am also a Jefferson NUT!!!! My students all swear that I only teach Jeffersonian history. The Dome Room picture is from a Gilder Lehrman American History Institute I attended in the Summer of 2006. The topic was Jefferson and Religion and part of the workshop was spent at Monticello.
