North faces. South faces. I've got faces and I've posted them.
And you can post your face too, now that Pete has set up a Facebook group for White House enthusiasts. I can't access Facebook from work, but I can access Wikipedia, so here a link to the Wikipedia entry for Facebook.
UPDATE: Below are the two illustrations I mentioned previously from Singleton's Story.... I haven't added them to the site because they seem too fanciful, with their weird windows and all. They are very similar tho, perhaps so similar that the later one (dated 1800) was based on the earlier one (dated 1799).

OK, I'm registered at Facebook - now what? Is there an official name for the page Wingnut has set up for White House folks? - and how would I access it?
ReplyDeleteWhat about privacy concerns?
My 5-year-old niece could probably do this in her sleep...
I can't find it either
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteI found the facebook group: White House Fanatics. Hope this is helps (and it's the right site--cause I just joined it).
Glad to know that, Mimlog. I'll check it out. Thanks! Hope my pic won't scare anyone - look for a beard and Philip Johnson/Le Corbusier glasses... assuming I can actually post it...
ReplyDeleteDerek - Jackie Kennedy - in the introduction to her 1962 White House Tour, uses the bottom picture (I think) of the two you just posted and tells us that it's a view of the house as Hoban originally designed it - with three floors above a basement. I think it's highly conjectural - but still a nice view.
"White House Fanatics". I like it.
Hey mimlog. Is that you? logan?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think that's Mimlog in the Domeroom at Monticello. Lucky guy! I've *always* wanted to see the domeroom...
ReplyDeleteAbout the engravings...I've read in A TOUR OF THE WHITE HOUSE WITH JBK on page 14 that these depict Blodgett's Hotel in Washington, with the President's House one of those hazy buildings in the background. The hotel was also designed by Hoban and had some architectural motifs similar to the White House-- thus the confusion.
ReplyDeleteI should add, it's the 1964 edition of A TOUR...lots of comments about the broadcast and minor corrections.
ReplyDeleteYes, guys Logan is mimlog (the name comes from a combination of my wife's name--Miriam and mine--Logan). And yes that is me in the Dome Room at Monticello. Along with being a White House enthusist, I am also a Jefferson NUT!!!! My students all swear that I only teach Jeffersonian history. The Dome Room picture is from a Gilder Lehrman American History Institute I attended in the Summer of 2006. The topic was Jefferson and Religion and part of the workshop was spent at Monticello.
