More Johnson and a little more Truman

Visitor Todd S sent a note about a mysterious picture in the Truman archives that turned out to be a mislabeled pic of the Vermeil Room in 1952 1948. While I was nosing around, I also found a pic of the Library in 1948, something else I didn't have. Now if I could only find some ground floor pics from the 1902 renovation....

Also, I added a several more images from the Johnson archives, and a pic that John in NOLA sent a while ago of the Nellie Custis (Washington) sofa.

  1. Great pictures! Is anyone else old enough to remember the verbal sparring between LBJ and Eartha Kitt?

Also, the Social Room photo was really mislabled by the Truman Museum. Not only was it not the Library, it was not 1952. It would have been pre-renovation. As we know, the Vermeil and China Rooms, along with the library, were paneled in knotty pine during the Truman renovation.

It is interesting to note that the Social Room and the Library both had the cast off Green/Red Room rugs in them. JBK brought the cast off Green Room rug back up to the Green Room to be used with her furniture before the wall covering and drapes became Boudin.

  2. I wondered about the timeline with the arched niches, but I see now that I've made a mistake. I thought the renovation included the arched niches and that they were changed later. I didn't think about the pine paneling. I've switched it around and fixed the date.
