Sub-Basement

Pete sent me a note about a great gallery of pics taken by a singers at the White House (thanks, Bob and Cherrie!) in, apparently, April. They show not only the state rooms where they performed but the sub-basement dressing room! I've added a couple to the semi-secret Sub-Basement page.

There's one where people are seated under a coat rack, which you can also see in the 1992 HABS photo under the stairs. That suggests that there's actually very little space down there.

Also, I've widened the blog. I've learned a lot about blog templates and CSS since starting yet another website awhile ago.

  1. There are a lot of good White House photos here, especially one of the East Room set up for a formal dinner. Having looked at all the photos, I think this occasion was the birthday party for Pope Benedict XVI when he was in DC. Unfortunately, he couldn't be there, having visited the White House earlier in the day.

  2. What a fun website! It's nice to have something interesting to listen to at work.
I'm listening to "A Christmas Story" right now!

    Thanks for everything, D.

  3. Why do we consider the sub-basement secret/semi-secret? If we can find what's down there, I'm sure anyone who would want to do harm could find them. I guess I just want to see as much as I can.

  4. I believe the 2 sub levels have some sensitive defense shelters and offices so we won't ever get the entire layout or photographs of those areas.

So I think that's why it's semi secret. The Fanatics site has photos of some of the sub basement storage areas like where the dishes are stored and other laundry areas and so on.

But I agree Colton, I want to see as much as I can, no matter how insignificant it may seem to the ceremonial/formal and more popular parts of the house. I'm interested in everything . . . every square inch.

  5. Well, that's why the sub-basement is semi-secret. The page is semi-secret just because I don't have it marked on the floor plan. You can get to it by clicking on the staircases to it on the ground floor or by clicking the link to it on the quasi-secret Site Map page.
