Lousy connectivity from the Doubletree in Pittsburgh this week is making it difficult to do any kind of online activity. Nevertheless, I managed to just acquire this fine miniature of the White House from the Danbury Mint via Ebay.
I already have the 5-inch version, which is considerably less detailed and accurate. This one is the 9-inch version and much better all around. I also recently acquired a 1950s-era plastic model that is quite accurate, altho it seems to have the 1917 roof.

Dang!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty impressive! Prolly one of the best pennies you ever spent!
Mr Burns : "Hop in to my White House Smithers"
ReplyDeleteSmithers: "But sir it's only . . ."
(Burns pulls a gun, cocks it, points it at Smithers)
Mr Burns: "I said . . . GET . . IN"
Yea, I got that 1950s plasatic model too. infact I have 2 from the 50s. Both kinda suck when it come to the third floor, but one of them is really good besides that. The one from Marx.
ReplyDeletehave any of you seen the White House in miniature exhibition? It looks pretty impressive in photos... certainly one of the biggest doll houses in the world!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I saw the White House in Miniature exhibit in Washington (at the Smithsonian) in the fall of 2000. It's amazing. And HUGE.
ReplyDeleteApparently there was a lady working on a tiny needlepoint rug for the Blue Room, back in 1995, when they went and redocorated the room and messed her up! I think they still display her rug, partially completed. Haven't seen pic of the Miniature House taken since then, to know if they updated the Blue Room. Is there a website for it?
I've seen that Marx model of the W.H. - but just in the box. It looks facinating. My brother gave me a 3-D jigsaw puzzle of the White House one time - fun to build, but not very accurate.
Poor long-suffering Smithers! I know - I used to work for Mr. Burns! Boys and girls, can you say "co-dependent"?
Several years ago, I met John and Jan Zweifel at their museum in Florida. My family and I had gone to WDW and we decided to visit the Miniature White House. I especially wanted Mr. Zweifel to autograph my book on the Minature White House. When we got there, the museum was closed because they were moving the miniature for display at the Bush Presidential Library. As we were leaving Mr. Zweifel comes out and apologizes. When he finds out that we were from GA and I wanted him to autograph my book, he invited us in to see the disassembling of the miniature. It was really neat. I wanted to take pictures, but Mrs. Zweifel asked me not to, so I didn't. They were really nice people and gave us a really unique opportunity.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the podcast on the White House Historical Association website about the Tiffany redecoration. Very interesting!
