Oval Office & the Resolute
I created a separate page for the Resolute desk to get its history off the Oval Office page and so I had space to add some trivia about Truman's "The Buck Stops Here" motto and Kennedy's distress-call coconut. I can't think of anything else that is particularly famous or interesting that has been displayed on the president's desk, but suggestions are welcome.

I can't get over how horrid the flooring looks in the photo of the Carter Oval Office. It may just be the lighting and the angle, but to me it looks like the floor of an old cabin.
ReplyDeleteI think that look is caused by the poor quality of the original image (I did a lot of processing to brighten and correct it). After playing with the original again, I think that the lower right part of the image might have a greenish stain.
ReplyDeleteThat article erroneously says JFK was the first to use the Resolute desk. It was Hayes, and every president from him to JFK used it, but LBJ, Nixon and Ford didn't. The mistake is made since it was identified with JFK 'cause JFK Jr.'s famous photo playing in it. Since the wood panel was added by FDR, for example, the desk obviously has a lot more history.
